Isolation and characterization of extremophiles for biotechnological production of polyhydroxyalkanoates
Original language description
Extremophilic microorganisms are capable of living and prospering under extreme conditions under which other microorganisms do grown or even survive. These extraordinary capabilities of extremophiles are advantageous for commercial use since requirements on sterility of the process and risk of contamination are considerably reduced. This work deals with isolation and characterization of PHA accumulating extremophilic bacteria in particular thermophiles and halophiles. In order to enrich natural microbial consortia (activated thermophilic sludge from waste water treatment or microbial consortia present in saline water) in PHA accumulating strains, we employed so called feast-famine cycling strategy.
