Optimization of extraction, purification and stabilisation of biologically active compounds from microbial biomassbiom
Original language description
Many microbial compounds, such as carotenoids or lipids, have large potential use in various industries. This research is focused on the opti-misation of extraction of such lipophilic compounds from biomass of carotenoid producing yeast and microalgae, using solvents suitable for pharmaceutical or food industry applications (ethanol and hexane) and on determination of their stability while stored at various ambient temperatures, such as in the freezer or in the fridge. The researched microorganisms include strains of yeast from genus Rhodotorula, Cysto-filobasidium or Sporidiobolus and strains of microalgae from genus Scenedesmus, Desmodesmus, Chlorella or Chlamydomonas. Cultivation of these microorganisms include small-scale fermenter cultivations or cultivations in Pyrex Glass Bottles with proper aeration. In general, ethanol proved to be the best extraction solvent, when it comes to pigment extraction from yeast or algae biomass, while hexane proved to be compar
