Bioactive Zirconia-Based Porous Scaffolds For Potential Bone Graft Applications
Original language description
Alumina toughened zirconia (ATZ) / calcium phosphate (Ca-P) composite scaffolds were fabricated via polymer replica technique, the technique that best mimics the macrostructure of trabecular bone. Strong inert core based on ATZ was composed of microsizedzirconia powder bonded by colloidal solution of boehmite. Sintered scaffolds were coated by suspension composed of hydroxyapatite / tricalcium phosphate powders and PVB binder. Scaffolds exhibited well-interconnected structure with pore sizes ranging from 300 to 1200 ?m. Different porosity (50-98%) was achieved by repeating the replication process 1-6 times. The Ca-P coating with a thickness of about 50 ?m was firmly adhered to the ATZ core. Neither of tested materials was cytotoxic. The apatite formation, appeared on the surface of coated scaffolds after immersion in simulated body fluid (SBF) indicated a good bioactivity of the ATZ/Ca-P composite.
