Preparation of Metallographic Samples with Anodizing Layers
Original language description
Anodization is an electrochemical process that converts the metal surface into a wear/corrosion resistant, dielectric oxide layer. The thickness of the resulting layer depend on the working parameters (voltage, current, type of electrolyte, concentration and temperature of the electrolyte, etc.). In this work the preparation of zinc metallographic samples with anodic layer is described. Samples by prepared anodic oxidation on the zinc substrate are rather brittle and porous. During the mounting, cutting, grinding and polishing, the layer can be deformed/delaminated and determination of the thickness is distorted. The problem is to determine the boundary between the anodic layer and resin. The resulting anodic layer thickness were measured by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
