Role of magnetic nanoparticles in development of biosensors for viral infection diagnostics

  • Original language description

Magnetic nanoparticle (MNPs), a biocompatible nanomaterial has huge upside potential in viral diagnosis as they offer multiple functions. They can be employed in the preconcentration of the viral sample by applying adequate surface modification with a capturing agent. Because of their inherent magnetic properties the separation is straightforward. In addition, due to their physiochemical properties they were also used as label to obtain the analytical signal in the detection step. Therefore, simple and cost-effective synthesis of MNPs has increased their application in biosensor fabrication to achieve detection of trace level of an analyte in the complex sample matrix. The diversified role of MNPs application in the sample preparation by pre-concentration, immune-magnetic separation, extraction has been discussed. Moreover, the magnetic labels, enzyme-like property and modified fluorometric labels have given a new dimension in the application of MNPs for viral detection. This chapter aims to present and shed light on the application of MNPs in viral detection and their future perspective.
