The iconography of Christ in the Resurrection panel of the so-called Hohenfurth Cycle in an exegetic view.

  • Original language description

The Resurrection panel of the so-called Hohenfurt Cycle combines two scenes: the Visitatio sepulchri and Resurrectio Christi. The direct depiction of the Resurrected Christ was asserted in the mid-12th century. At that time, an ostentatious presentation of other objects of Christian devotion was developed, activating the innermost images of the corresponding religious reality. The cultural flourishing of the 12th century likewise included the evolution of new processes of the visual treatment of theological contents, an exegetic concept of representation in particular. These circumstances help the understanding of the ideological viewpoints of the art and concept of exceptional high quality presented in this panel painting. The scenes of the Visitatio and the depiction of the Resurrected Christ (Resurrectio) are deliberately presented in contrast. The scene of the Visitatio is defined by the narrative character of the image, which creates its real space, in relation to which the figure of Christ emancipates itself; the frontal position of the body and the facies in the form of the Veraicon emphasize its epiphanic and cultic character. In its type and singular appearance, it retrospectively follows the iconography of the direct depictions of the Resurrected Christ, proving its relation to the ostentatious component of the liturgical practice and cultic devotion. It is particularly in its relation to the scene of the Visitatio that a remarkably sophisticated exegetic concept is represented, whose reconstruction this study is attempting to present on the basis of patristic sources and the exegesis and theology of the High Middle Ages.
