The Why? Question: Teaching Exact Disciplines at the University of Economics and Management (VŠEM)
Original language description
When teaching any area of exact disciplines, the following questions often arise: Why are we learning this? Where will we need it? Long-term experience in teaching exact disciplines (Mathematics for Economists, Exact Methods for Economists, Logic and Logical Thinking, etc.) in economic programs of universities and the use of modern teaching methods led us to new approaches to teaching these disciplines. In addition to classic lessons (lectures, seminars, seminar theses), we created video presentations for students of the University of Economics and Management (VŠEM) on the university website, as well as the publicly accessible website and Facebook pages of Mathematics for Everybody with VŠEM, featuring both standard lessons and tests verifying knowledge. Using personal consultations, classroom inquiries, and Facebook messages, students can, as a first step, participate in expanding the contents Because trivial applications are very unattractive for students, we take a second step: we create presentations with non-trivial applications that are pre-consulted as well as reviewed by economists. In the third step, we place the corrected video presentation both on the website of VŠEM and on the publicly accessible website and Facebook pages of Mathematics for Everybody with VŠEM. We illustrate the whole process on a specific example of the application of differential calculus in economics by indicating the elasticity of a function, where we show its application on both supply and demand.
