Modern Approaches in Czech Prison Staff Education and Training Against a Background of Comenius’ Thoughts
Original language description
This contribution is conceived as a reminiscence of the birth of a modern prison staff training in the Czech Republic since the beginning of 1960th. The authors discuss the origins of the epistemology foundations of philosophical and pedagogical theories of predecessors of the times, the process and their utilization within the theoretical part of the initial education of civilians and the practical part of the initial training of uniformed staff of the Prison Service of the Czech Republic. Special attention is paid to the last twenty years as a considerable development of education programmes—systematic initial training, vast long-life education opportunities, final examinations of officers after their probationary period, and implementation of good practices from abroad. The Czech Prison Service Academy has partners in France, Latvia, Lower Saxony and other countries. Not only mere adapting of foreign educational programmes but mutual exchange of experience is taking place today. The peak of the academic work is represented by the cooperation with high schools and by the scientific research of the Cabinet of Documentation and History dealing with the Czech penitentiary past. The Czech Prison Service Academy has a high professional potential to organize numerous international conferences. The most significant conference is the traditional Penology Days. The training centre of the Prison Service of the Czech Republic has become a prestige educational institution.
