Fascination with Darkness: What Motivates Tourists to Visit Sites of Tragedy and Remembrance – Case Study of Lidice Memorial

  • Original language description

This chapter delves into the motivations driving tourists to dark tourism destinations, explicitly focusing on the Lidice Memorial, a site of Genocide Tourism in the Czech Republic. The authors’ investigation aimed to identify the critical motives influencing visits to this destination and propose incentives to promote visitation. By applying quantitative research, the authors were able to provide an exploration of the motivations behind visiting a Genocide Tourism site. The authors’ findings suggest that tourists are often motivated to understand historical events, pay their respects, and reflect on human suffering, thereby emphasizing the importance of learning and commemoration. The study examines visitors’ preferences for the Lidice Memorial, emphasizing the significance of authenticity, narrative, and emotional impact in shaping their experiences. As the study reveals, commemorations also significantly contribute to fostering a sense of community and collective memory. With its emotional and educational dimensions, this aspect of dark tourism makes tourists feel deeply connected and engaged in the shared experience. Furthermore, the study reveals that visits to this site, often somber and reflective, are not motivated by a fascination with or interest in death. It invites tourists to reflect on the complex nature of their experiences, adding a layer of depth to their understanding.
