The last three northern white rhinoceroses (Ceratotherium simum cottoni) - belonging to a European zoo and currently residing in Kenya - are not capable of natural reproduction anymore. The only way to help this important „landscape architect" of central Africa to survive and to create a self-sustaining population is the use of assisted reproduction technologies combined with emerging stem cell technologies. Crucial for the large scale generation of transferrable embryos produced in vitro with the goal to implant them into surrogates of the closely related species, the southern white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum simum), was the optimisation of the oocyte harvesting technique, so called ovum pick-up (OPU). The technique has keen successfully developed during the last two years in the context of reproductive management of southern white rhinoceros females in various European Zoos: The complex procedure has been performed on fifteen females so far. All oocyte donors are part of the European Endangered Species breeding Programme (EEP). In some excellent female donors the OPU was performed repeatedlvwhite rhinoceros (Ceratothertam stam stan, was the optimisation of the oocyte harvesting technique, so called ovum pick-up (OPU). The technique has been successfully developed during the last two years in the context of reproductive management of southern white rhinoceros females in various European zoos. The complex procedure has been performed on fifteen females so far. All oocyte donors are part of the European Endangered Species breeding Programme (EEP). In some excellent female donors the OPU was performed repeatedly without any side effects. The procedures had no negative impact on their fertility. It was concluded that the procedure can also be used to treat causes of infertility such as cyst formations in the uterus or in the ovary. The development of the procedure was identified as one of the key elements for survival of the northern white rhino in the ground-breaking strategic road map on how to save the northern white rhino that was published by an international group of experts in the journal Zoo Biology in May 2016 (Saragusty et al., 2016: Rewinding the process of mammalian extinction.
