Sweet cherry cultivars bred in the Research and Breeding Institute of Pomology Holovousy Ltd.

  • Original language description

The subject of this 8-year study was 9 sweet cherry cultivars bred at Holovousy. These were evaluated in comparison with the standard cultivars ‘Burlat’, ‘Kordia’ and 'Regina' in a modern intensive orchard using the Gisela 5 rootstock. The earliest of them was ‘Kasandra’, which ripens 3 days after ‘Burlat’. The latest one in the harvest season is ‘Tamara’, ripening in the 6th sweet cherry week, a few days before ‘Regina’. The least vigorous was ‘Fabiola’, whereas the ‘Kasandra’ was distinguished by the relatively highest tree growth potential. ‘Vanda’ was the most precocious in cropping, but the total productivity was the highest in 'Kasandra'. ‘Tamara’ was unique in total fruit quality and it had the largest fruits, frequently over 12 g, and the highest fruit firmness. All other cultivars had fruit quality comparable to the standards or even better. Vanda’ was the most tolerant to fruit cracking after heavy rains.
