In the week from June 3 to 7, 2019, the Fruit Section of EUCARPIA had its ‘XV Breeding and Genetics Symposium’ in Prague. The XV EUCARPIA Fruit Breeding and Genetics Symposium was organized by the Research and Breeding Institute of Pomology Holovousy Ltd. (RBIP) and Czech University of Life Sciences Prague (CULS) in cooperation with the European Association for Research on Plant Breeding (EUCARPIA) and International Society for Horticultural Science (ISHS). 150 scientists and experts from 30 countries across five continents took part in the event. 40 scientific works were presented in the form of oral presentations. In addition to oral presentations, two poster sections were filled, with 110 posters. Oral and poster presentations were mostly related to the latest world trends in fruit breeding programmes, maintenance and diversity of fruit gene banks and use of molecular genetics in fruit breeding and for description of fruit genetic resources. During a business meeting of EUCARPIA and ISHS on the last day of Prague part of the symposium, it was decided by voting that Julius Kühn Institute in Dresden, Germany, would be the organizer of next 16th EUCARPIA Fruit Breeding and Genetics Symposium in 2023. Dr. Henryk Flachowsky will be the convener. Based on the voting of business meeting participants, Dr. Jiří Sedlák from RBIP in Holovousy was elected as the new chairman of EUCARPIA fruit section. He replaced prof. Stefan Tartarini from the University of Bologna in this position.
