Use of the SNaPshot method in sweet cherry marker-assisted selection
Original language description
Presentation of a poster at the XVI EUCARPIA Symposium on Fruit Breeding and Genetics, Dresden-Pillnitz (Germany), 11.9.2023 - 16.9.2023. Sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.) is one of the most important fruit crops of the temperate climate zone, with increasing worldwide production. Cherry breeding programs therefore face a significant challenge to develop varieties that display a range of traits that are currently preferred by both growers and consumers. The aim is to breed varieties that achieve high and regular fertility; have a low susceptibility to damage due to biotic and abiotic influences; have the desired fruit appearance and quality; as well as varieties that will contribute to the extension of seasonality. However, classic breeding of cherries is a challenging and highly inefficient process and there is an effort to increase its efficiency. The use of DNA markers, which can be implemented at the seedling stage, proves to be a useful tool for selecting offspring carrying the desired trait, as unpromising individuals can be eliminated already in the first year of their life. The identification of suitable molecular markers associated with desirable cherry traits is therefore very important for MAS in cherry breeding. Using the GWAS method, markers of important breeding traits were identified, namely skin color, fruit firmness, fruit size (weight), ripening time and flowering time. Here we present the optimized SNaPshot method, which can analyze all five selected traits in one reaction.
