Pyramiding Ba (blue aleurone) genes to develop darker blue grain wheat

  • Original language description

A growing interest in the production of crops and varieties rich in anthocyanins are widely known for their health-promoting effects. In wheat, the blue colour of the grain is determined by incompletely dominant Ba (blue aleurone) genes, which control the synthesis of anthocyanins in the aleurone layer of the grain endosperm. The Ba1 gene is located on chromosome 4B and the Ba2 gene on chromosome 4A. The Ba1 gene has a remarkable xenia effect on the colour of the aleurone layer. On the other hand, the effect of xenia is not apparent in the Ba2 gene, but its existence cannot be denied. If individuals with the Ba1Ba1Ba1Ba2Ba2Ba2 aleurone layer genotype are selected, it can be expected that a form with a high content of anthocyanins as a result of the quantitative effect of the Ba genes. In this study, the accumulation of Ba genes is assessed by visual judgment and selection using colorimeter data. Abstract of the 137th Meeting of Japanese Society of Breeding. 28-29. March, Tokyo.
