Pyramiding Ba (blue aleurone) genes to develop darker blue grain wheat: The effect of visual selection.
Original language description
There is increasing interest in the production of crops and varieties rich in anthocyanins, which are widely known for their health-promoting effects. In wheat, the blue color of grain is determined by the incompletely dominant Ba gene that controls the synthesis of anthocyanins in the aleurone layer. The Ba1 gene is located on the 4B chromosome and the Ba2 gene is located on the 4A chromosome. The Ba1 gene has a remarkable xenia effect on the color of the aleurone layer. On the other hand, the xenia effect on the Ba2 gene is not remarkable, but the existence of the effect cannot be denied. When individuals with the genotype of the paste layer of Ba1Ba1Ba1Ba2Ba2Ba2 are selected, the strain with the highest anthocyanin content is obtained due to the quantitative effect of the accumulation of the Ba gene. In this study, Ba gene accumulation was evaluated by visual judgment and selection using data from a colorimeter. Poster published in Breeding Research, 23, 2021, 2, p. 114.
