Rapid discovery of functional NLRs using the signature of high expression, high-thoughput transformation, and large-scale phenotyping
Original language description
2025 IS-MPMI Congress 13-17 July 2025, Cologne, Germany. Poster. Using the signature of expression, candidate functional NLRs were identified from 69 accessions across 18 different grass species (d). In partneship with KANEKA, 995 NLRs were transformed into wheat to generate an NLRseek library of 5,177 independent transgenic lines. This collection was screened to find new resistence against major fungal diseases of wheat: stem rust caused ba Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici (Pgt) and leaf rust caused by Puccinia triticina (Pt). We identified 31 new resistant NLRs, 19 to stem rust and 12 to leaf rust, derived from 10 diverse grass species (d). This vastly increases the number of cloned NLRs available to develop rust resistant wheat.
