Stabilized austenitic stainless steels and their passive state

  • Original language description

Stability of the passive state is the function mainly of the chemical composition, structural sensitivity, and the state of stressing of the metal, coupled with the specific environment, as is also the case e.g., with boiling water and pressure water reactors. The effects of titanium and niobium in the solid solution on passive state stability of CrNi and CrNiMo steels as well as on their localized corrosion are compared. Electrochemical polarization measurements involving reactivation from the outset of the passive region indicated a reduction of the critical reactivation current density for the titanium-stabilized steels. Cyclic polarization measurements in 1 mol/l NaCl confirmed the positive effect of titanium, compared to niobium, on the depassivation potentials, although the repassivation and corrosion potentials were subject to only inconsiderable changes. Capillary defectoscopy of U-band type specimens tested at 275°C in H3BO3 plus Fe2O3 solution has not revealed any corrosion c
