Investigation of The Mechanical Behaviour Of Zirconium Alloy at Different Strain Rates Using Sub-Size Tensile Specimens

  • Original language description

Zirconium alloys are used in nuclear reactors due to very low absorption cross-section of thermal neutrons, high hardness, ductility and corrosion resistance. The mechanical properties such as ultimate tensile strength or yield stress are not publicly available but they are necessary for obtaining relevant material data using the Finite Elements Analysis. The present work is focused on the investigation of an experimental zirconium alloy under various strain rates at room temperature. As there is in many cases lack of zirconium alloys for testing, miniature specimens were used for testing and compared with standard tensile specimens to prove their usability. Six strain-rate levels were investigated, i.e. from the quasi-static tensile test conducted ata strain rate of 10-3 s-1 up to the dynamic high strain rate of 375 s-1. For precise strain measurement, pictures captured by the high-speed camera were evaluated by the ARAMIS system using the Digital Image Correlation method (DIC). The
