The Peerage of Tudor Ireland in Modern Historiography (1945-present)

This essay explores the place of the Tudor nobility ? or peerage ? in modern and contemporary Irish historiography. It argues that, in contrast to Britain and continental Europe, scholars of sixteenth-century Ireland have overlooked the collective significance of the nobility in favour of other themes and perspectives. This lacuna may be related to the fact that extensive aristocratic records have not survived; but it may also be a reflection of a present-centred preoccupation with the theme of hostileAnglo-Irish relations, which made the institution of the peerage (together with its strong connections with the English monarchy) appear less helpful and important. Moreover, the insularity of Irish historiography meant that Irish historians were slow toembrace British and Continental theories on the medieval and early modern aristocracy.
