A European Frontier Elite: The Nobility of the English Pale in Tudor Ireland
Original language description
This book explores the relationship between English government in Ireland and the lesser nobility of the region known as the English Pale, from the late 15th century until the reign of Elizabeth I. It argues that the default position of this regional elite was loyalty and service to the monarch - an attitude based on the lords' traditions and identity, the location of their estates and their economic status. However, relations between Tudor government and the nobles were fragile and broke down on several occasions; by the 1560s the relationship between both groups was one of profound mutual distrust. The fortunes of the Pale nobility demonstrate the unpredictable nature of Tudor interventions in Ireland and, more broadly, the variety of noble responsesto state formation in early modern Europe.
