The English Pale as a Region in Later Tudor Ireland, 1541-1603
Original language description
This chapter argues that border region known as the 'English Pale' in Ireland continued to exist in later Tudor times, despite the fact that several Tudor policies aimed at the erosion of regional variations in Ireland. In economic, military and administrative respects, the English Pale retained much of its specific medieval characterists. Moreover, it is shown that the regional identity of the Pale community became more distinctive as the sixteenth century progressed.
