    Explains Carlyle&apos;s attempts to assist his friend John Rutter Chorley&apos;s election to the Reform Club in February 1849. In a letter to Edward Rigby, Carlyle urges him to vote: &quot;Against Mr. Chorley I should suppose no mortal would think of voting; but it appears unless 20 will take the pains to vote for him, the election may be lost.&quot; The article explains: &quot;Chorley was duly elected at the ballot on 28 February . . . and subsequent editions of the Rules and Regulations confirmed the membership of &quot;Chorley, John Rutter Esq.&quot;
