Original language description

Jordan unearths a second unpublished Carlyle letter, addressed to William Boxall, Director of the National Gallery on 19 January 1872. In the missive, he responds to Boxall&apos;s request for counsel on a painting the Gallery purchased the previous year, Gerard ter Borch&apos;s Ratification of the Treaty of Münster (1648). Boxall was grateful, and thanked Carlyle profusely for his &quot;document full of information.&quot; Jordan notes that &quot;this new letter shows that Carlyle was willing to make the occasional foray into forms of painting other than portraiture, and that his advice was valued by the leaders of the artistic establishment.&quot;
