  • Original language description

This paper describes the preliminary design of the active cells and handling casks for the European Spallation Source (ESS) target station. ESS active cells are used to maintain, process, package and store used radioactive components from the target station operation. The general layout, the confinement, the access protocol in the active cells and in the areas surrounding, the equipment and the waste conditioning are described in this paper. The handling casks are used to transfer irradiated componentsbetween the monolith and the active cells. The procedures from the components grabbing in the monolith to the introduction in the cells, the engineering concept and the confinement were studied and are described in this paper.
