MSR On-line Reprocessing Technology and Nonproliferation Aspects
Original language description
Molten Salt Reactor (MSR) is a Generation IV reactor system which can be very effectively operated as a breeder within the thorium - uranium fuel cycle (232Th- 233U) with the breeding factor significantly higher than one. This ability rusults from liquidfuel on-line reprocessing, which enables extraction of originated uranium 233 U or its precursor 233 Pa respectively. A combination of liquid fuel and thorium-uranium fuel cycle exhibit also other significant advantages of MSR in thermal spectrum - minimized production of higher transuranium elements and low fission products inventory, minimal excess of reactivity and high power density of the reactor. A big challenge of the MSR system is the on-line pyrochemical reprocessing technology which is necessary to keep the reactor in the logn run. As a standard reactor system operated within the closed fuel cycle and breeded new fissile material (233U), the non-proliferation and physical protection issues have to be solved carefully.
