Technological Aspects of MSR Fuel Cycle

  • Original language description

Molten Salt Reactor is the only reactor system, which can be effectively operated within the pure 232Th – 233U fuel cycle with the breeding factor significantly higher than one. This ability results from the use of the liquid (molten salt) fuel, which allows the on-line reprocessing of MSR fuel. The on-line reprocessing is the only way how to obtain nearly 100 % of breaded 233U by removal of the originated protactinium 233Pa to prevent its undesirable nuclear conversion to 234Pa. Moreover, the on-line reprocessing of MSR fuel is necessary to keep the reactor in operation by cleaning-up the fuel salt from fission products and by feeding fresh fuel into the system. The technological aspects of MSR liquid thorium – uranium fuel processing and MSR fuel on-line reprocessing are intensively studied in ÚJV Řež and in Research Centre Řež. Some parts of the technology were also verified in higher laboratory scale. These activities are a part of present Czech R&D program focused on the technological development of MSR system.
