Oxidation behaviour study of SiC/SiC composite in the high temperature helium environment
Original language description
Silicon carbide, SiC/SiC composite possess outstanding mechanical, thermal and electrical properties. SiC/SiC composite has become a prime material candidate for fuel cladding in Generation IV nuclear reactors. It is also considered material for blanketin fusion. SiC/SiC composite provides some attractive features, i.e. low neutron absorption, low activation and it exhibits a very good thermal stability and thermal conductivity. However, it is necessary to evaluate its oxidation resistance in nominal conditions of the high temperature gas cooled reactors as well as in incidental or accidental ones. Therefore the oxidation behaviour of SiC/SiC has been studied in the high temperature helium environments simulating representative Gas Fast Reactor (GFR)coolant conditions. Consequently the weight changes were evaluated and the microstructural characterisation was performed.
