Nanomodified low-cost biological material for the removal of heavy metal ions

  • Original language description

Article deals with sorption properties of the magnetically modified biological material Using low-cost biological material – peanut husks, a waste from agriculture industry, has been investigated as a possible replacement for the current expensive adsorbent for heavy metals removal from wastewater. The magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (ferrofluid) ranging from 10 to 20 nm in size according to electron microscopy measurements were used to prepare magnetically modified peanut husks. Chemical compositions, phase analysis, scanning electron microscopy were used for characterization of prepared material. Adsorption studies were carried out using the batch technique at laboratory temperature to obtain the sorption and desorption equilibrium data. AAS-FA was used for determination of the heavy metals concentration before and after both experimental studies. The experimental data were assessed by several types of adsorption isotherms. The changes of Fe content in magnetically modified material were observed as well.
