    Study of crack initiation in ferritic martensitic steel T91 in PbBi

  • Original language description

    The ferritic martensitic steel T91 is being considered as one of the candidate materials for internal structural components of future Heavy Liquid Metal reactors. The position of T91 on the list of the candidate materials is now being questioned due to the evidence of its sensitivity to liquid metal embrittlement (LME) mainly in PbBi eutectic and, in specific conditions, also in Pb. The main goal of this work is to provide a detailed characterisation of the crack initiation phenomena in Liquid Metals. Slow Strain Tensile Tests of tapered specimens were used for threshold stress determination of crack initiation. The taper creates a variation of stress along the gauge length which allows the identification of the threshold stress for the crack appearance. Tests were carried out in the CALLISTO cell, in air and in PbBi at 300°C with a reduced oxygen content (about 10-7 wt%). Post-tests examinations were carried out in the SEM to highlight the morphology of cracks. A preliminary evaluation of crack initiation threshold stresses is presented.
