  • Original language description

The chapter deals with the description of chemical processing of liquid fuel of thermal or fast Molten Salt Reactor systems based on fluoride salt coolant type. Chemical processing of liquid fuel of Molten Salt Reactors covers a technology of fresh MSR liquid fuel preparation and a technology of MSR fuel reprocessing. The technology of fresh liquid fuel processing covers mainly the uranium tetrafluoride and thorium tetrafluoride processing. The technology of MSR liquid fuel reprocessing covers several pyrochemical processes like gas extraction process, fluoride volatilization, molten salt / liquid metal extraction, electrochemical separation from molten fluoride salt media and vacuum distillation. Description of individual partitioning techniques and conceptual on-line reprocessing flow-sheets are mentioned both for single-fluid and double-fluid MSR systems working in thorium – uranium fuel cycle.
