CFD Modeling of Natural Convection and Freezing Phenomena for Heavy Liquid Metal Coolants

  • Original language description

Within development of the Generation IV reactors, heavy liquid metals (HLM) are considered as one of the possible coolants because of their suitable thermal-hydraulic and neutronic properties. Utilization of computational models allow to predict thermalhydraulic behavior of the HLM cooling circuits and their components. Specifically, modeling of natural convection and freezing of HLM is essential for safety analyses of the HLM cooled reactors. Such a model, intended for both the steady-state and transient simulation of lead natural convection and freezing in vessel-type geometries, was developed at Research centre Rez using CFD code ANSYS FLUENT 17.0; the main features, limitations and challenges occurred during its development along with the first results obtained will be described in this paper.
