Comparison of Coatings used for Heavy Liquid Metal Applications

  • Original language description

This work focuses on the coatings used as a barrier against Heavy Liquid Metals (HLM) influence and coated material behaviour under mechanical loading. The comparison of two kinds of coatings deposited on two different steels is presented: ferritic-martensitic steel T91 coated with AlTiN by High Power Impulse Magnetron Sputtering combined with pulsed-Direct Current Magnetron Sputtering technology; austenitic steel 316L coated with Al2O3 deposited by detonation spray. Both samples underwent tensile tests in PbBi eutectic (LBE) at the temperature of 550 °C. After exposure, the samples were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). In both cases, the yield strength (YS) of the steel was exceeded. Features of the interfaces and damages were studied in depth to characterize the resistance of the coating to the simultaneous effect of load and environment. Both coatings offered protection against corrosion; however, localized cracking gave rise to the damage of the substrate. These kind of coatings provide a corrosion barrier, which once damaged is not able of self-healing.
