Debris Fretting Tests on Standard and Coated E110 Cladding

  • Original language description

The leakage of a fuel rod is according to IAEA report released in 2010 caused by the presence of debris in the coolant. Small pieces of e.g. wires, coming from the maintenance of the primary circuit of the nuclear power plant, undergo flow-induced vibrations and exert the mechanical load on the surface of fuel cladding. The repeatable, even small-in-force, fretting of the same area of the fuel rod with the debris-wire causes local vanishing of the cladding material which can lead to a through-wall defect. The usage of the coatings on the surface of standard fuel cladding (e. g. E110) is supposed to increase the endurance of fuel cladding against the mechanical loads and fretting. The experiment for the investigation of the fretting wear speed was performed in the Research Centre Rez. The uncoated and coated E110 cladding specimens underwent a cycling with a stainless steel wire that simulated the debris flow-induced vibrations impact. This work summarizes the outputs of this experiment and assesses the improvements against the standard conditions of wear characteristics of the E110 cladding when the thin coating was applied.
