Long term corrosion behavior of two austenitic steels after exposure in flowing lead

  • Original language description

To implement heavy liquid metal (HLM) reactors, it is necessary to demonstrate the functionality of the construction materials, their structural integrity, and safe long-term service life. The application of liquid lead as a coolant in Lead-cooled Fast Reactor (LFR) presents significant challenges due to its susceptibility to corrosion, especially at unsuitable temperatures or not optimal amount of dissolved oxygen in the melt. To demonstrate the integrity of materials and components for structural applications, their performance under the suitable environmental conditions must be evaluated. Furthermore, the factors affecting the construction material performance are specific to each combination of material and environment. Considering the state of knowledge on corrosion and corrosion protection and especially the need for long term compatibility data of the structural materials in liquid lead, it is necessary to conduct long-term experiments to understand the processes and obtain reliable data. As part of research into resistant materials for the construction of lead-cooled fast reactors, specimens of 316L and 15-15Ti stainless steel were studied. This study investigates the corrosion kinetics and mechanisms of two steels in flowing lead with 10−7 wt.% oxygen at 480 °C for 16,000 h. Post-test analyses revealed a possible mechanism of long-term susceptibility to localized solution-based attack. The corrosion of both austenitic steels was low. The surface was mostly covered with a protective thin spinel film. The objective of this paper is also to introduce a research infrastructure for material research in heavy liquid metals in CVR. This also includes the technical specification of the experimental material loop and its operational possibility. The experimental facility is operated within the framework of the Large Research project Infrastructures of the Czech Republic - Czech International Center of Research Reactors (CICRR). This project offers the use of research infrastructure, including personnel for the operation of the infrastructure under open access conditions.
