From Bulk to Phase: Exploring Gamma Irradiation Effects on Cementitious Materials Using Microscale Mechanical Testing
Original language description
In this work, the effects of gamma irradiation on the mechanical properties of the outer product phase were studied using micro-cantilever beams prepared by focused ion beam (FIB) fabrication. Insights into cantilever preparation optimization are provided, along with an analysis of how incorrect FIB ion and electron beam parameters can affect the properties of the studied material phase. Micro-beams prepared from the main hydration product of cement paste, irradiated with a total dose of 13.82 MGy at 11% relative humidity, showed an increase in Young’s modulus (+12.6%), tensile strength (+30.8%), and fracture energy (+97.7%). These enhancements are attributed to water radiolysis induced by gamma radiation, leading to the compaction of globules within the calcium-silicate-hydrate (C-S-H) gel-based phases.
