Antibacterial effect of honey on mastitis pathogens
Original language description
There were tested seven kinds of honey: blossom honey K and BK with the same beehive but different places (K with the main content of pollen from Pyrus/Prunus-T family 38%; BK 62% of Cruciferae family), blossom honey S with 82% contant of pollen from Cruciferae family, blossom honey MM with 75% contant of Cruciferae family pollen, one honeydew M with 74% contant of Myosotis sylvatica pollen (electrical conductivity 1.003 mS/cm) and two Mänuka honey (MAN100+ and MAN400+ Watson & Son, New Zealand). The strains isolated from dairy cows with suspected mastitis disease were selected for testing: Staphylococcus aureus 51, Staphylococcus aureus 428, Streptococcus uberis, Streptococcus agalactiae, Enterococcus faecalis and Escherichia coli. The most significant inhibition (100%) was found in case of honey MAN400+ at 20% concentration for all of tested strains, followed by significant effect of honey M, MM and MAN100+ (60-100%) on S. aureus strains, S. agalactiae and S. uberis, and K honey (89-94%) only on S. uberis and S. agalactiae. In case of concentration of 30%, only honey M had comparable effects with Mänuka honey on all tested strains (98-100%), then MM honey (68-100%) and BK honey (71-98%, except S. aureus 428). Poster. International Seminar: More value from every sample throughout the whole dairy chain. 2. – 6. 10. 2017, Lille, Francie.
