Towards a world pea (Pisum sativum L.) germplasm core collection: The case of common markers and data compatibility.
Original language description
Several large germplasm collections of the Pisum genus are maintained world-wide. To facilitate their management and increase efficiency of their use, a core collection is being currently developed. Traditionally descriptions were made for germplasm accessions by morphological descriptors, together with known pedigree and passport data. In recent years genetic structures of pea germplasm collections have been investigated by several molecular marker approaches. However, after data processing, further use of such data is limited, in the absence of cross-comparison between collections. The key points for the future should be adoption of a common set of markers applied across the developed core sets, together with the deposition and availability of both molecular and agronomical data, creating a virtual world-wide pea germplasm resource for our common benefit.
