Impact of Anti-Methanogenic Feed Supplement on Rumen Fermentation and Enteric Methane Production

  • Original language description

Poster at the "XXIII Middle European Buiatrics Congress", 23-27. 4. 2024, Brno, Czech Republic. The proposed project's primary goal is to develop a new feed supplement based on algae, plant tannins, and probiotics with an anti-methanogenic effect and a high potential for implementation in the Czech and foreign markets. The newly developed feed additive will be intended to enrich the feed ration of ruminants to improve rumen fermentation and animal productivity and reduce the formation of enteric me-thane and its negative impact on the environment. One of the other expected results is the beneficial effect of supplementing immunoprotective substances from micro- and macroalgae (e.g.,beta-glycans),which strengthens the immunomodulating effect of probiotics. The project will contribute to achieving balanced neutrality regarding the emission of environmental pollutants (mainly CH4 and NH3).The project involved a comprehensive evaluation of the potential of plant additives for mitigating emission factors in livestock farming. Preliminary findings from the pilot experiment indicated a positive im-pact of the supplemented feed additive M1 on rumen protozoa counts and methane reduction compared to the control group, validating the efficacy of tannins in combination with saponins in mitigating methane emissions. The development of an anti-methanogenic feed supplement offers a promising strategy for reducing methane emissions from ruminants while enhancing animal health and productivity. The research is currently underway to optimize the formulation for commercial application and to assess its effectiveness under semi-operational conditions.
