Original language description
The Volume No. 3 of complete textual bilingual (English and Czech) Bohuslav Martinů Complete Edition contains two vocal-instrumental works. Field Mass (1939) for baritone solo, male chorus, wind and pecussion instruments, armonio and piano originated based on the lyrics of Jiří Mucha (in combination with biblical and liturgical passages chosen by Martinů) as composer´s reaction to the outburst of the World War II. The Spectre´s Bride for solos, female choir and orchestra based on the poem by Jaromír Karel Erben originated as a part of ballet Špalíček in 1932. Composer later in revising the ballet took out this part and made a suggestion it might be performed separately. The main source for the critical edition of both works are autograph scores. In appendix is published for the first time an original and later abandoned version with quotaion of the medieval Czech church song Jezu Kriste, štědrý kněže, In the volume are also included a number of period translations of the text of Field Mass.
