Fertilizer and caustic produduction with bipolar membrne electrodialysis or salt metathesis by electrodialysis
Original language description
Electrodialysis with bipolar membranes (EDBM) allows the production of acids and bases from their corresponding salt solutions. This process can be energy-efficient and has a number of interesting applications. It is also possible to transfer two salts LX and MY into two new salts MX and LY with salt metathesis by electrodialysis (EDM). The objective of this article is to provide a brief overview of the practical EDBM and EDM application to produce ammonium sulfate (LY) and caustic soda (MX) from sodiumsulfate (MY). The salt metathesis by electrodialysis experiment can be conducted in order to gain the same result as EDBM. The objective of the trials was to determine parameters of salt splitting of sodium sulfate (MY) with bipolar electrodialysis if sulfuric acid was continuously neutralized by ammonia solution to get ammonium sulfate (LY). Second experimental setup was salt metathesis by electrodialysis with sodium sulfate (MY) and ammonium hydroxide (LX) solution to get caustic soda
