Application of ultrafiltration and nanofiltration membranes in the electrodialysis process

  • Original language description

n the membrane science, there is a promising innovation idea how to link electrodialysis process with ultrafiltration or nanofiltration. In this essay, there were implemented the ultrafiltration and nanofiltration membranes into the EDR-Z electrodialysismodule. The purpose of their insertion was to examine their impact on ED process characteristics. In the whole, it was used six types of membranes of different MWCO (from 0.15 to 100 kDa) from PES, PVDF and PA PFC matrix. The desalination tests were performed with initial solution of 0.2 M sodium chloride in water and three different voltages were applied (1 ? 3 V/cell). In addition, current efficiency, mass flux and energy consumption of ED hybrid stack were examined. It was found out, that the lowestmass flux reached the PA PFC NFX nanofiltration membranes with MWCO of 0.15 - 0.35 kDa. On the contrary, the PES XT membranes with MWCO of 1 kDa reached the best results. Furthermore, not only the XT membranes but all types of PES membra
