Hybrid electrodialysis stack with filtration membranes

  • Original language description

Insertion of different types of filtration membranes into electrodialysis stack can lead to improvement of the filtration characteristics. Consequently, the impact of different types of filtration membranes implemented into the stack on the electrodialysis process was examined in this thesis. In the whole, six types of filtration membranes with different MWCO (molecular weight cut-off) from PES, PVDF or PA PFC matrix and with dissimilar specific electric resistance were inserted into diluate chambers of electrodialysis stack. Furthermore, the 0.2 M sodium chloride and three voltages (1, 2 and 3 V/cell) were used for desalination. One of the main filtration characteristic, mass flux, was compared. All in all, the filtration membranes from PES (polyethersulfone) matrixreached the best results. This type of filtration membrane evinced similar specific electric resistance like ion exchange membranes. On the contrary, the lowest mass flux reached the PA PVDF NFX nanofiltration membranes with MWCO of 0.15-0.35 kDa. In addition, all types of membranes with PES matrix achieved good results, therefore their application in the processes with real solutions can be considered.
