    Processing of acid whey after nanofiltration by electrodialysis in combination with electrodeionization

  • Original language description

    Whey is the liquid remaining after the removal of casein protein as a result of the milk curd formation in the production of cheese. Demineralization is a process to deionize whey from magnesium, calcium, potassium and chlorine, sodium and phosphate ions. In practice, whey has been desalinated by electromembrane processes which are electrodialysis (ED) and electrodeionization (EDI). The electrodialysis shall be understood as one of the electromembrane processes in which the negatively charged particlesare separated from the positive ones using the effect of their migration to the electrodes. The migration is controlled by the ion-exchange membranes through which only some particular kind of ions is transported depending on their electric charge. One of important technology of electromembrane processes is electrodeionization that combines two technologies such as electrodialysis and ion exchange. EDI is a process that is used for depth demineralization of low conductive solutions.
