Mechanical properties of heterogenous bipolar ion exchange membranes

  • Original language description

The presented paper deals with the mechanical properties of heterogeneous bipolar membranes. The mechanical properties have an influence on the behaviour of membranes in electrodialysis stack. The typical heterogeneous membranes for electrodialysis consist of polymeric matrix, fine milled ion exchange resin and reinforcement fabric. The tested bipolar membranes are without reinforcement fabric, therefore their mechanical properties are determined only by properties of the matrix and ion exchange resin. The samples were prepared with various type of matrix and different amount of ion exchange resin. The mechanical properties of prepared bipolar membranes were tested on the materials testing machine H5KT by Tinius Olsen. The parameters of testing were determined by the norm ISO 527-3/2/5. The membranes were tested in the swelled and dry state. The obtained data were compared with the dimension changes of the membranes during the swelling and properties of separate polymer matrix. Finally the current-voltage characteristics, which describe a water dissociation and transport properties of bipolar membranes, were measured.
