The composition influence on mechanical and electrochemical properties of heterogeneous bipolar membranes

  • Original language description

The work is focused on the preparation of heterogeneous bipolar membranes and the influence of different composition on mechanical and electrochemical properties. This type of membranes are usually used in the electrodialysis stack to produce an acid and base of complementary salts. The main function of bipolar membrane is a water dissociation to proton and hydroxyl. However the mechanical stability is required too. The heterogeneous bipolar membranes consist of two parts; matrix (usually polyethylene) and milled ion exchange resin. The bipolar membranes samples with various combination of polyethylene were prepared. Three metallocene and three linear low density polyethylene from Exxon Mobil were used (Exceed 1018; 1327; 3518 and LLDPE 6101; 6201; 6301). Commercial ion exchange resins were rinsed in demineralized water and it was dried in fluid dryer by hot air to humidity below two percent. The dry ion exchange resins were mixed together with varies types of polyethylene at the semi-production, two screws kneader HAAKE PolyLab OS PWT. The granulated mixtures were extruded through the flat head to 8 cm wide sheet. The two sheets of membranes (anion and cation exchange side) were putted together by hot pressing. The parameters of pressing were 50 kg per square centimetre and 140 °C for ten minutes. The prepared samples of bipolar membranes was swelled in demineralize water and weight and size changes were observed and measured. The mechanical properties of prepared bipolar membranes were tested on the Universal testing machine Tinius Olsen H5KT. The parameters of testing were set according the norm ISO 527-3/2/5. The membranes were tested in the swelled state. The obtained data were compared with the dimension changes of the membranes during the swelling. The current-voltage characteristics, which describe a water dissociation and transport properties of bipolar membranes, were measured. The swelled bipolar membranes were set to equilibrium state with solution of 0.5 M potassium chloride. The samples of heterogeneous bipolar membranes were measured at 25°C in 0.5 M KCl solution. The effective cross-sectional area of the membrane was 0.74 square centimetres. Potenciostat Biologic SP-300 and the four electrodes configuration were used for measurements.
