Extended measurements od ion-exchange materials properties

  • Original language description

Goal of this work was to measure some of extended material properties of ion-exchange materials used in electrodialysis (ED) and electrodeionization (EDI) devices in order to describe their behavior in these processes and to be able to optimize their performance. Regarding ion exchange resins, the measurements of their deformation resistance were carried out at different temperature and resin swelling degree. In case of ion exchange membranes, their dimension changes under the influence of pressure and temperature were measured. To obtain a complete view, the ED spacers’ properties during temperature changes were also examined. For each experiment, the unique work methodology and measurement apparatus was proposed. The dependences of deformation resistance on swelling degree of certain ion exchange resins were described and it was found that this dependence is characteristic feature of each resin and could not be described by universal equation. Moreover, the important impact of temperature changes on ion exchange membranes and ED spacers was observed, and it was further examined under the conditions of pressure load similar to that in real ED device. This work confirms that the research of mechanical properties of ion exchange materials has a great importance, mainly for their application in industrial ED and EDI modules.
