    Experimental Investigation of Membrane Distillation

  • Original language description

Membrane distillation (MD) is a novel separation technology, driven by a temperature difference. Vapour molecules are transported through a porous hydrophobic membrane by a difference in partial vapour pressure. Similarly to reverse osmosis, ions are retained on the concentrate side and pure water is collected on the distillate side. Despite many attractive features there are no large scale applications yet, the main reason being the lack of proper hydrophobic membranes, providing high fluxes and high distillate purity. Membranes for MD do not need to be selective, as they serve only as an interface between liquid and vapour. Hydrophobic microfiltration membranes are mostly used today, and they can be made of various polymers, such as polyethylene (PE), polyethersulfone (PES) or polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). The membrane performance was studied on a direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) testing unit. It is based on a flat sheet module with the membrane area of 10x20 cm. A peristaltic pump drives the hot feed and the cold distillate in counter-current mode to a horizontally positioned module, the cold distillate on top, hot feed on the bottom, in order to minimize heat losses. The transparent module enables a close observation of bubble formation or eventual clogging of the spacer channels. Flux is calculated from a difference in mass of both concentrate and distillate in time.
