Characterization of ion exchange membrane with special surface structure

  • Original language description

This review focuses on the preparation of the heterogeneous ion exchange membrane with special surface structure made by three types of knit. Prepared patterned ion exchange membranes have the geometrical structures on the surface made by the pillar with rectangular shape. Three types of structured ion exchange membranes are prepared together with flat membrane to compare the influence of geometrical structures on behaviour of ion exchange membrane. Ion exchange membranes are prepared by hot pressing. These four types of membranes are characterized with the same methods. Electrochemical, mechanical and physical properties are determined. Monitored parameters of ion exchange membranes are ion exchange capacity, electrical resistance, and permselectivity, ultimate strain and ultimate stress. Structured membranes exhibit comparable electrochemical and physical properties like the flat ion exchange membrane. The scanning electron microscopy and other optical analysis are used for study the quality of surface structure of ion exchange membranes. Some transport parameters are monitored by tests in an electrodialysis stack with two concentrations of solution. Special surface structure has only small influence on the transport parameter. Better results were achieved by the solution with lower concentration.
