Effect of the preparation conditions on the properties of polyetherimide holloe fibre membranes for gas separation
Original language description
Gas separation membrane systems have been received a lot of attention thanks to their efficiency and their economic and ecological advantages. Asymmetric hollow fiber membranes have been recognized very suitable for gas separation, they exhibit a good mechanical resistance while keeping good transport and separation properties, as well as good productivity, flexibility and easy handling. Preparation and properties of polyetherimide (ULTEM 1000®) hollow fiber membrane are described in a paper. Polyetherimide hollow fibers were produced on spinning machine by inversion phases process. Experiments were designed with the aim to optimize the synthesis parameters for the production of asymmetric polyetherimide hollow fibers. The tested parameters during the processing were the polymer solution flow, the bore liquid flow, the air-gap distance and the take-up speed. The produced membranes were characterized by CO2/CH4 gas mixtures permeation experiments, light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The impact of synthesis parameters and fiber morphology was investigated, as well as the impact on transport and separation properties. Results show the critical impact of bore flow and take-up speed on fibers structure: fiber tubular aspects were provided without deformation when high bore flow was used and small fiber diameters were obtained when the take-up speed was high.
