Electrodialysis of various electrolytes using heterogeneous and homogeneous membranes
Original language description
Aim of this work was to investigate electrodialysis desalination of monovalent and divalent ions with different types of ion exchange membranes. Since properties of membranes determine the performance of electrodialysis, two types of membranes were used – homogeneous and heterogeneous. Heterogeneous Ralex® membranes and homogeneous Fujifilm membranes were used in tested ED stacks. Electrodialysis of four different electrolytes was performed. As salts were used Na2SO4, NaNO3, Ca(NO3)2 and MgSO4. Solutions of each one of these salts in demineralized water were prepared with conductivity 20 mS.cm-1. Electrodialysis of solutions was done on laboratory ED stacks with 10 membrane pairs with voltage 10 V. Recirculation batch mode has been applied with flow rates of diluate, concentrate and electrode solution 50 l.h-1. Firstly, desalination characteristics of the stack with heterogeneous membranes were measured and then measurements with homogeneous membranes took place. Conductivity of diluate on input and output side of the stack and conductivity of concentrate on the output side were recorded in regular intervals. Process was stopped after the diluate conductivity on the input fell below 1 mS.cm-1. Analysis of results confirmed that homogeneous membranes remove some types of ions faster in comparison to heterogeneous membranes due to their lower electrical resistance and better permselectivity. However, worse selectivity of Fujifilm homogeneous membranes had been proved for divalent cations.
